Making Presumptions

I know I shouldn’t be amazed at how people perceive things, because we all think differently. Have you ever seen pictures that only show a piece of the object and you have to guess what it is? Every one of us would have a different view of the same picture. We do the same thing with the people around us. We each see different things and we make a presumption based on that view. Not only do we see differently, we sometimes hear a part of a conversation in passing and think we know what they are talking about. This too, is presumptuous.

Before we make an assumption of what we see or hear, we should ask some questions. Does this pertain to me? Am I a part of the conversation? Am I making more out of this than what is there? Sometimes if we stop and think about the situation, we might find out that we are just being a busybody. If something really bothers you, ask this question Why does it bother me some much?

We need to have a clear picture of what is really going on before we judge. You see I have experienced this first hand. Instead of someone asking me about the situation, they have gone to someone else. First of all they didn’t have all the facts and secondly if they would have just asked I would have told them. Better yet they could have stopped and joined the conversation then they would know all the facts. You see if I am talking in public and I am not trying to hide what I am talking about, then find out what the whole conversation is about before a judgement is made. If I have something to hid, I am not going to be standing out in the open talking.

Every week we go out soul winning and the main verse we use is Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” This applies to all of us not just when we are witnessing. None of us are perfect. I get frustrated with others sometimes, but then I remind myself that I am not perfect, so don’t expect them to be. Trying to live peaceably with all men is not easy. (Romans 12:18 “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”) Even the verse states “If it be possible”. The Lord knows what struggles we go through as humans. There is always a better way to look at things.

You see even Jesus was among people who found fault with him. Mark 7:2 “And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.”

The verse that continues to be a reminder to me is Song of Solomon 2:2 “As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.” We can see the thorns or we can look for the lily. To be Christ like and call ourselves a Christian, then we need to not look and make an assumption about something. Take time to make sure that what you see is really what you see. Make sure what you heard is really what was said. Better yet stop looking for the negative (thorns) and look for the good (Lily) in people.
