The Older Generation

Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

I had the privilege of growing up in an Independent, Fundamental, Hell Fire, King James Bible Believing, Soul winning, Separate, Old Paths Baptist Church. When I went to College I wanted to continue on that path. My husband also came from the same kind of Church. Together we made a vow to serve the Lord together and continue on that path.

Over the years I have seen a shift in many of Churches and Colleges that once were Independent, Fundamental, Hell Fire, King James Bible Believing, Soul winning, Separate, Old Paths Baptist. What saddens me is the shift in people who I love and serve with. I am not saying they don’t still believe this way. But they have become weary in well doing. Now is the time to work harder than ever. Now is the time to stand up and fight. We have to study the Word more, Pray more, and Spread the Gospel more today than ever.

People who once stood firm and unmovable seem to be weary. The energy and excitement of serving the Lord seems to be less and less. Rejoicing with others over the blessing of the Lord rarely happens. We had a time when we looked forward to being together. We could share what the Lord is doing in our lives, talk about the Bible and just rejoice with one another. Today people walk away from those conversations. One of my Sister-in-laws who is now in heaven once said to me, “We are all Christians we don’t need to talk about.”  If we don’t talk about it, many will die and go to Hell. The more we walk with God the more we should want to talk about it.

Today I see clusters of people who are high minded and have an attitude that if you are not with us, you are not right with God. (James 2:8-9,” If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.”) If you don’t work on staff anymore it is because you are not right with God. So therefore you are not like us.

I see people who act one way when Pastor is watching and totally opposite when he is not looking. Their favorite phrase to use is “Pastor ….” Or if there is something they don’t want to do, they just say, “Pastor wants you …” Also, no matter how many times Pastor has said, “Early is in on time and on time is late” they are always late. And if Pastor gets on to them and says don’t do it again, they say “Yes Sir” but are still late.

Young people take offense to someone who tries to help them. They rely on each other more than the wisdom of those who have been in the ministry 30+ years. The Bible states, “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.” (Titus 2:3-5) It is hard when they don’t want to listen. (1 Peter 5:5, “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”)

My heart is heavy and I pray for them that they can see that the older generation is not their enemy. We have walked this road along time. We cannot get weary in well doing. We need to be an example and stand firm. Time is running out. Tomorrow may never come. Glean from those who have passed this way before.
