When things happen in our lives we have a tendency to cut off connections with those around us. My parents referred to this as burning your bridges. If we burn our bridges they are harder to rebuild. How we handle things that come in our life, will determine the future events as well. Everything has a domino effect. Good or bad there is always going to be a time when you will revisit where you have been. If the bridge is burnt then you have to rebuild it.
It is better to not burn your bridges in the first place. There is always a way to fix the things that come in our life. If we have the attitude that it doesn’t matter, or nothing will ever change, then we are setting up the root of bitterness in our life. Nothing is hopeless with God. It is only hopeless when we try to do it on our own. Doing it on our own can burn bridges.
We had a situation that one of my daughters referred to as burning bridges. I reminded her that even if someone is burning their side of the bridge we can’t. We need to be strong and pray for others so that when they return, rebuilding the bridge is easier because our side is not burnt. This would be the side of forgiveness. If we have a forgiving heart we will not burn our own side of the bridge. You see there is always two sides.
Ephesians 4:32 states that we are to forgive as Christ has forgiven us. Who are we to hold on to the hurt and be unforgiving? The Lord went through way more than anything we have ever experienced and yet he forgave us of all and more. Jesus was perfect without sin, and we are not. That is why he tells us in Romans 12:1 to daily present it to the Lord. Lay it down and trust the Lord to take care of whatever it is that has come in our life. When we totally depend on the Lord, we will not burn our bridges.
