Detours

Have you ever been on a trip and you had to take a detour? Sometimes it is difficult and frustrating. My husband and I were out visiting and there were some roads that had been changed so instead of a direct path we had to detour. It did not just happen on one street. The streets were already one-way streets, but now they are blocked in certain areas, so you are going around the block and back to the other side. Confusing right? Why are detours there?

The path before us has some detours. We need to seek God daily so we can learn and grow. So, we can help others. If we are seeking God’s direction and trust Him, He will direct our path. (Proverbs 3:5-6) Even in the detour God’s direction is the best direction. There are times that we take a detour from the direct path to where God wants us to end up. Just like those roads with their detours, we finally reached our destination. God has a purpose for all things. God allows different things in our life to teach us something or to get our attention. Nothing happens accidentally. So, why do we need the detours?

I think sometimes we need a detour because we are not strong enough to handle the-end result. God allows us to take a detour so we can learn and grow stronger. We should be asking the Lord to teach us what we need, to make this journey called Life. A consistent prayer life and Bible time shows us the path we need to take. (Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”) Always seeking what direction God would have us go.

Sometimes, I think we need to take a detour so we can help others. Sometimes people get bogged down in the detour they are on. Life is filled with circumstances and problems that can cloud their vision.  We are to be a light to help them find their way back to the main path. We are to always be seeking for the lost and helping them to see Jesus. Our goal in life is to be like Christ. He said he came to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10) So we also need to help the lost to be save.

If we look at the path we are on, even with the detours, and seek God, we will enjoy the final destination. We will see God’s purpose. We do not understand when we are going through it, but we will understand it all by and by. Remember, His ways are higher than ours. Isaiah 55: 8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
