What do you want your Obituary to say?

Life is a fleeting thing. No one is guaranteed of tomorrow. What we have at this moment in time is precious. The question is not meant to be morbid. It is a thought-provoking question based on what you are doing for the Lord. Like the virtuous women, what will be written in your obituary?

As a woman, the Bible gives us a guideline of what our obituary should look like. It is found in Proverbs 31. I have heard women say: that does not apply to today’s woman. I have to say it does. The virtuous woman is a model of how we should be as women for the Lord. Let us look at a few verses:

“11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.” Her husband safely trust her to not spend money unnecessarily. That verse is very straight forward. Her husband should be able to trust that she will work hard to save so there is no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Every action she takes will be good and well spoken of.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.” In today’s world many women have to work a job to help make ends meet. She is willing to work with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.” She goes grocery shopping and cooks for her family. No fast food restaurants.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.” She gets up early and takes care of her family. Fixing breakfast or prepareing lunches to be taken, as they go off to school or work.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.” She is the first one up in the morning and the last one to go to bed.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.” She thinks of others and is willing to help in time of need.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.” She makes sure they have the right clothes to wear in all seasons.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”  When people see her they know that she takes care of her family. Her actions are always the same.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” She helps people to know the wisdom of God. She is an encourager to people. She is kind.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.” She works hard and takes care of her family first. She is always moving.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

These verses sum it up. She has a walk with God. Because she fears the LORD, she will be praised, and her works will follow her. This sounds like a really good obituary.
