Blaming Others

Every morning begins with God’s word. I look for something that is thought provoking. My husband and I listen to the dramatized reading of the King James Bible. This morning I heard one verse of my Husbands bible time that was thought provoking. He was reading in the book of 1 Samuel.

The verse that caught my attention was about King Saul pointing his finger at the people for taking the best animals for sacrifice instead of destroying everything. (1 Samuel 15:21) Instead of admitting he was wrong, Saul blamed the people. Had he admitted he was wrong he would not have lost his kingdom.

As I thought about King Saul, I started looking at other times in the Bible where the blame was put on someone else. In Genesis chapter 3, Adam blamed Eve, Eve then blamed the serpent. In Exodus 32:22 we find Aaron made a golden calf and blamed the people. Miriam becomes leprous in Numbers 12 for condemning Moses as the leader. Moses is angry with the people and says it is their fault he could not go into the promise land. (Deuteronomy 3:26) Each of them where trying to make themselves look blameless.

In the New Testament there is the story of the women found in adultery. The people wanted to stone her. (John 8) Jesus reminds them that they themselves are not without sin. The people dropped their rocks and went away. We do not know what Jesus wrote on the ground. It was most likely scripture as this is always how Jesus responded to situations. Through the life of Christ we find him say, “it is written” using scripture.

Jesus himself taught in Matthew 7:1-2, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” When we point our finger at others we have 3 pointing back at us. This is a reminder that we are not without sin.

We have to take responsibility for our own actions. When we do that we will see God bless us. King David is an example of that. David admitted that he was the blame not someone else. (Psalms 51) Every time he was corrected for doing wrong, he took responsibility for it and repented to God. Then God blessed him.

God already knows what we have done. We just need to admit it and say: I was wrong. (1 John 1:9) God will forgive.
