Accountability

James 2:10 “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” (KingJamesBible)

There are many words that describe accountability. The one word that sums up all the words is Obey or Obedience. Yes, those are two words, but they mean the same thing. Other words that we see in accountability are responsibility, liability, answer-ability, or reporting. If we break it down to accountable there are other words like chargeable or bound by.

To obey means: to act according to what you have been asked or ordered to do by someone in authority, or to behave according to a rule, law, or instruction:

If we watch the news, we see that our world is starting to cross these words out of their vocabulary. There is so much lawlessness in our nation. Even the justice system is not holding anyone accountable for their actions. And if you listen to their reasoning of their actions, they will say this is a free country where I can do whatever I want to do. Freedom is not doing whatever we want. They do not hold themselves accountable, nor does the law. The standard has been lowered to a society of thugs and bullies.

Being fearful of those who want to hurt us or bully us is crippling our nation. Fear stops those who believe that we should be held accountable for our actions from doing the right thing. Wither it at work, out in public or even in our homes. Fear is paralyzing our nation from being able to agree to disagree. Fear holds us prisoner to the disobedience of others.

Many people have given their lives so that we could have the freedoms that we hold dear. There are men and women everyday in law enforcement who have taken an oath to keep us safe and uphold the law. Even firefighters have made a commitment to protect life and sometimes have put their lives on the line for others. These brave men and women hold themselves accountable to do what is right.

From the beginning of our nation, laws were put in place so that we would hold ourselves accountable. When those laws are not obeyed then the justice system is put in place to  hold us accountable. As a child our parents held us accountable to the rules of the home. Rules and policies of the workplace hold us accountable for our actions.  All these things are not to take away our freedoms. They are to help us to be kind and compassionate for others. To be respectable people. Showing kindness and respect to others is returned back toward us.

We need to stop living in fear and hold these others to the standard of the law. We need to take a stand. We are accountable for our own actions. If we do nothing, we are accountable. If we let others hold us by fear, we are still accountable.

All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.

We are accountable!
