Your Own Advice

Problems come and go in our lives. Sometimes we know the answers, but we go to someone else for advice. As I thought about this, it occurred to me that we are not really looking for advice. We want someone else to make a decision for us. We already have the answer. So why do we do this?

As humans we do not like making tough decisions. Especially if we do not want to do what we know we should do. Having someone else to help us make the right choice is a lack of trust in ourselves. I might add it is a lack of trust in God. All decisions should first start with prayer and looking in God’s word.

If someone else tells us what we need to do, then if it does not go well, we can point the finger at them. It is like children who need to be told what to do. We have to let go of that childlike attitude. There is a time in life that we just have to grow up. We are responsible for our own well-being. We have to not be selfish and rely on God alone.

As I stated before the only real advice comes from reading the word of God and prayer. We should asked ourselves, “If this was someone else coming to me for advice, what would I tell them?” The answer is already in us. Selfishness keeps us from seeing the big picture. Yet when it is someone else, we have all the answers. So, take your problems and ask that question. You will find the answer and life will be easier,

Another question to ask is “Is this a hard decision because it goes against God?” Sometimes we want others to tell us because we do not want to do what we are supposed to do. If they tell us the opposite of what we should do, then we can justify our decision. No matter how we justify something, if it goes against God, we are responsible for the final decision.

There are times when we need council for spiritual guidance. In those times we need to seek God first and ask him to lay someone on our heart that will show us what God would have us to see. Spiritual guidance is different than when we just want someone to be on our side because of a selfish decision. When we are walking with God and have spiritual questions then you seek someone to help you. Seeking God’s perfect will is far better.

Be careful who you seek advice from. Make sure you ask questions (“Is this a hard decision because it goes against God?”  “If this was someone else coming to me for advice, what would I tell them?”) Seek the word of God and pray.
