Religion is a practice of something, the Bible calls this works. Works cannot take care of sin. (Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”) We go to Church and do good things because it is the right thing to do. All that will not get us to heaven.
In the Old Testament there had to be a sacrifice to cover sin. In the New Testament Jesus was the final sacrifice to cover sin. With that sacrifice he conquered death so we could live forever. To live forever we need to accept the gift called Eternal life. A gift is not something we work for or pay for ourselves. A gift is something we receive from someone. The gift of Eternal life is the ultimate gift. The price that was paid was far greater than anything we could ever do.
God loved us so much he sent Jesus to die for us. (John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”) Think about the many people that have lived since Adam and Eve. The amount of sin that has covered thousands of years. That is beyond our imagination. Can you picture in your mind a mountain that represents all that sin. Jesus spread his arms wide and took all that sin on himself, so we could have eternal life. The only way he could bear that sin was to be God in the flesh. As mortal men, we are too weak to bear our own sin. Yet Jesus bore it all.
We must recognize that we are Sinners, we say and do things that we should not say or do. (Romans 3:10, 23 “10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”) With a humble heart we believe that Jesus died for our sin and ask for that gift of Eternal life. There is no fancy prayer. The prayer is not the words we say, but the belief that God will give it to us if we ask. There are three things that we must do.
- Admit that we are a sinner. We say and do things we should not do.
- Believe that Jesus died for our sin.
- Ask him to give us eternal life.
We simply admit to God that we are a sinner, we need him to get to heaven and ask him for the gift of Eternal life. He promised that he would give it to us.
If we never ask and we die we will end up in an awful place called Hell. The Bible describes Hell as a place of torment, where the fire is never quenched. It is a place of eternal darkness, where you can hear others weeping and gnashing their teeth, but you cannot see them. It also talks of worms that eat at you, and the worm never dies. The final description is that Hell is Eternal death.
