Character

Where do we get our manners and etiquette from? We got it from our parents. Good parents are always teaching their children the proper way to act. They are always showing them how to work and how to respect others. All of this is forming the character.  As we become adults, we make a choice to have good character. This character should spill over to our homes, our workplace and our community.

In the workplace you can see those who have good character by the way they work. You can also see what kind of character they have by how they treat others. These characteristics are the building blocks that help them to succeed in life. The harder someone works and has a great attitude, the more likely they are to be promoted. Sadly, there are many people who have worked for companies for 20 – 30+ years and are still just a worker bee. They do not advance because they lack the right character.

As an employee of a company our responsibility is to work hard and do our job to the best of our ability. When someone has a great attitude and is willing to learn and grow, they advance. When someone has an opinion about how everything should be done and is negative, they are left to do only what they do. Year after year, day after day, just doing the same old thing. This is a miserable way to spend your life. Successful people do not tell the boss how things should be. They become the boss and make it happen the way they think it should be. Until they are the boss, they keep their opinions to themselves, work hard and advance little by little.

As employees, our only priority is to do what is ask of us to do. The only thing we deserve is a paycheck for the work we do. If we are not willing to go above and beyond, we should not feel as though we deserve more. We only deserve what we are willing to put into the task before us. Working hard even when no one sees. Helping others to succeed and be happy for them when they do.

All this is character that we have been taught throughout our lives. We either choose to have the right attitude or a negative attitude. We choose to work hard or hardly work. We choose to be kind or churlish. No matter what happens to us we are the ones making the choice of how the outcome happens. When things do not happen the way we think they should, we should ask the question: Am I doing what I am supposed to do with the right attitude? Ask the boss what I can do differently.

One last observation is we cannot point our finger at others and say it is their fault. We made the choice. We need to take full responsibility for our own actions. No one makes choices for how we work or treat others. That is completely on us. We need to take a good look in the mirror at ourselves and make the right decisions. That is true character.

Proverbs 22:1, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
