Why do we not remember things? Sometimes we go through life and overlook the little things. Sin in our life is sometimes not remembered. Those sins not remembered can go unconfessed and block the blessings of God.
What is sin? It is saying or doing things we know are wrong. This sin keeps us from having a home in Heaven when we die. First, we must admit to God that we are sinners, that we believe that Jesus died for our sin and ask for the gift of eternal life. God gave a promise that if we ask, he will give us eternal life. (Romans 10:17, “For whosever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”)
There was a widow woman in 1 Kings that fed Elijah with a barrel of meal and a cruse of oil. When her son got sick and there was no breath in him. The widow women said to Elijah in verse18, “…art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?” This tragedy reminded her of sin in her life. When she cried out, the Lord did a miracle and restored her son to her.
How does the Lord bring to remembrance sin in our life? We are reminded through the preaching of God’s word. In that verse before she asked the question she prayed, “O thou man of God?” Elijah was the man of God in her life who showed her the power of God with the meal and the oil. This woman knew the Lords promises through the word that Elijah spoke.
I have heard in preaching that we need to confess our sin and the Lord will forgive. (1John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”) But I have also heard them say after you confess your sin to ask the Lord if there is any other sin we do not remember and confess that. The Lord will remind us of anything we have forgotten. Then we can confess and have a completely clean slate.
We are reminded through reading the Word of God and having a daily walk with God. The Bible can reach the deepest corners of our life where sin hides. (Hebrews 4:12,” For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.“) It is only hidden from our memory, God sees everything.
